                                        {"id":238,"date":"2026-06-10T05:42:50","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T05:42:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/americanindustryreview.com\/?p=238"},"modified":"2026-06-10T05:42:50","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T05:42:50","slug":"anti-weaponization-fund-challengers-question-its-demise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/americanindustryreview.com\/?p=238","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Anti-weaponization&#8217; fund challengers question its demise"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Challengers to the Trump administration\u2019s $1.8 billion \u201canti-weaponization fund\u201d asked a judge on Tuesday to let them seek evidence the Justice Department truly is abandoning the program.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanindustryreview.com\/?p=236\">GOP immigration funding bill clears House, heads to Trump<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The  came in response to arguments the Trump administration made in filings last week that the lawsuit is unnecessary because the fund \u201cis now not going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the challengers argue the administration has been unclear about the fate of the fund, which the DOJ announced as part of settling a lawsuit brought by President Donald Trump against his own administration following the leak of Trump\u2019s tax returns during his first term.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in the same week acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the fund was \u201cnot going forward,\u201d Trump himself said the fund was a \u201cgreat idea, and so do many other Republicans,\u201d the filing said.<\/p>\n<p>The government repeatedly cited unsworn statements from Blanche but has otherwise offered no evidence or explained how that position interacts with the settlement of the tax return lawsuit, the challengers told the judge.<\/p>\n<p>One DOJ official made \u201cno commitments that the Fund will not be established or operated in the future,\u201d the challengers wrote, and instead only confirmed that there were no activities taken to the fund as of June 8.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanindustryreview.com\/?p=234\">Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman lose bids for governor in South Carolina<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The filing came after Republicans sent Trump a major reconciliation measure funding immigration enforcement, in part on assurances that the administration had abandoned the controversial fund.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit was brought by several individuals, Common Cause, the National Abortion Federation and the city of New Haven, Conn.<\/p>\n<p>They asked for evidence that the DOJ has affirmatively abandoned the fund, such as statements that the settlement no longer creates a binding obligation for its creation.<\/p>\n<p>The challengers and the administration are set to have a hearing over the fund Friday before Judge Leonie Brinkema of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
