{"id":400,"date":"2026-06-24T22:11:57","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T22:11:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/americanindustryreview.com\/?p=400"},"modified":"2026-06-24T22:11:57","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T22:11:57","slug":"trump-halts-bipartisan-victory-lap-on-housing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/americanindustryreview.com\/?p=400","title":{"rendered":"Trump halts bipartisan victory lap on housing"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Hours before President Donald Trump was scheduled to sign \u200bcomprehensive housing legislation into law from the Capitol on Wednesday, he abruptly canceled the event, saying he won\u2019t sign it until Congress passes a separate election security measure.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanindustryreview.com\/?p=398\">Battleground House primary in Colorado poses test for Democratic voters<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency,\u201d he posted on his Truth Social account.<\/p>\n<p>The GOP\u2019s marquee election bill, which requires voters to prove citizenship to register and photo ID at the polls, does not have the necessary 60 votes to pass the Senate, and Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., has repeatedly said his members aren\u2019t willing to abolish the legislative filibuster to lower the threshold.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s announcement took some off guard and upended the housing victory laps lawmakers had planned. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, described it as a \u201ccomplete surprise\u201d and said \u201cto try to make this into a political issue is wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both parties and chambers managed to come together on housing, but \u201call of that\u2019s going out of the window,\u201d said House Financial Services ranking member Maxine Waters, D-Calif.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of the creative work that we worked on and negotiated for over a year [has] now been undermined by the president of the United States,\u201d Waters said at a Wednesday subcommittee hearing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Both parties hoped to use the housing package as a pillar of their midterm messaging around affordability.<\/p>\n<p>House Republicans were in the middle of a press conference touting the housing bill and other agenda items when the president sent his post, with Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., promising they would be \u201cthe party that governs and delivers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaker Mike Johnson acknowledged that Trump was \u201cdelaying\u201d the housing signing to pursue his voter ID priorities, saying at the news conference: \u201cHe has a window of time before he has to sign a bill. One potential wrinkle in that 10-day clock is that it doesn\u2019t start until the enrolled bill has been officially \u201cpresented\u201d to the president, and it wasn\u2019t clear whether that had happened yet as of Trump\u2019s social media post at 10:26 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>The president has previously threatened not to sign other bills into law until SAVE has passed but didn\u2019t hold firm to that threat.<\/p>\n<p>The signing about-face made for a tense mood ahead of Trump\u2019s expected appearance at a Senate Republican luncheon Wednesday, where the voter ID package was anticipated to be a main topic of conversation as it continues to derail Thune and leadership\u2019s agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., a vocal proponent of the voter ID bill, called it \u201cleverage\u201d and said he supported Trump\u2019s strategy of pulling out of the signing ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to get it done. It\u2019ll work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats were quick to seize on the delay, describing Trump as indifferent to what Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., called a \u201chousing crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I underline crisis three times?\u201d she asked. \u201cWe have a bill that Republicans and Democrats have built.
