Lawmakers and European officials hoping to get clarity on the U.S.-Iran conflict from President Donald Trump at a NATO summit likely left disappointed.<\/p>\n

During a Wednesday evening press conference in Ankara, Turkey, the first reporter to question him characterized the Iran standoff as a \u201cstrategic dead end for you\u201d and asked why Trump has been unable to fully end it. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think we\u2019re doing just the opposite. The Iran war has been a tremendous military success,\u201d Trump replied, before adding without mentioning still-high gas prices that rose after the war started on Feb. 28: \u201cI can only answer the question by saying they\u2019re not going to have a nuclear weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n

By the end of that answer, Trump, somehow, managed to bring up the 2024 U.S. presidential race, noting that his anti-immigration policies were a big reason \u201cwe won this election.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked earlier Wednesday during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte if a ceasefire with Iran was still in place after the countries traded strikes this week, Trump declared: \u201cTo me, I think it\u2019s over.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

But he sent mixed signals about the state of the conflict and negotiations toward a hard-to-reach peace pact.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to deal with them anymore. They\u2019re scum. You know what scum is? They\u2019re scum. They\u2019re sick people. They\u2019re led by sick people, and they\u2019re vicious, violent people.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs far as I\u2019m concerned, it\u2019s just a waste of time dealing with them. They\u2019re liars,\u201dTrump said. \u201cMy whole life, that\u2019s all I do is deals \u2026 Frankly, I don\u2019t want to waste my time with them. Now, I\u2019ll let our wonderful negotiators keep talking if they want, but I don\u2019t see it. I don\u2019t like these people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Less than one month ago, on June 16, a more optimistic Trump called Iran\u2019s new leadership \u201cvery rational people\u201d who were \u201cnice to deal with.\u201d Asked about that during the press conference, Trump explained his change of mind with a hawkish line: \u201cI got to know them. \u2026 I\u2019m not sure I want to make a deal. Let\u2019s just finish the job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kansas GOP Sen. Roger Marshall told Kansas City\u2019s KCMO radio on Wednesday that what he hears in the president\u2019s rhetoric is \u201cthat\u2019s Trump negotiating.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a saying that started nine years ago: \u2018Take everything he says seriously, but not literally.\u2019 I\u2019m still locked in on a couple goals as I look forward to the future years: No. 1, no nukes for Iran; No. 2, no boots on the ground; No. 3, keep the Strait [of Hormuz] open, pay attention to the price of gas and groceries,\u201d Marshall said, adding: \u201cWe may have to bomb the heck out of them some more.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meantime, Trump seemed to grow irritated in Turkey at times Tuesday and Wednesday when journalists pressed him on his relations with European leaders. \u201cEurope\u2019s a very different place than it was 20 years ago,\u201d Trump said on the summit\u2019s first day, his tone growing more serious. \u201cThey better be careful with immigration and energy. If they\u2019re not careful with those two things you\u2019re not going to have a Europe anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s comments on Iran were among a handful of notable reveals he made during the annual NATO summit.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Patriots for Ukraine<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Trump in recent weeks has clashed with Senate Republicans and mostly watched from the sidelines as House Republicans have feuded with each other. He set up another possible friction point with both on Wednesday when he announced he planned to clear the way for Ukraine to begin producing its own Patriot missiles.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut one of the things I think we\u2019re going to be talking about today, just a little birdie told me this about the fact that we\u2019ll give them the right to make Patriots, we\u2019ll show them how to do it,\u201d the U.S. commander in chief said during a meeting with Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. \u201cWe haven\u2019t informed the company of that, but that\u2019ll work out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Made in the United States by defense giants Lockheed Martin and Raytheon, the surface-to-air missile system is considered perhaps the world\u2019s best at taking down aircraft, cruise missiles and tactical ballistic missiles.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, also in the Zelenskyy session, told reporters that \u201cone of the dynamics that\u2019s changed in this \u2026 war over the last few months \u2026 is that the Russians are finding it more difficult to defend their own airspace.\u201d<\/p>\n

Congressional Republicans for years have opposed any additional support for Kyiv in its four-year-old conflict with Moscow.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kyiv coalition<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Should the White House ask Congress to approve any new funding for Ukraine\u2019s war effort, Trump could find a rare bipartisan coalition to provide the necessary votes.<\/p>\n

A group of Republican and Democratic members \u2014 GOP Sens. Mike Rounds of South Dakota and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Democratic Sens. Richard J. Durbin of Illinois and Chris Coons of Delaware and Ohio Republican Rep. Michael R. Turner \u2014 also met with the Ukrainian leader at the summit.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is abundantly clear that Russia is not winning this war. \u2026 Putin is at his weakest position in years and real sustained pressure can finally bring this war to a close,\u201d the group said in a joint statement, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The group called on the administration to provide \u201cadditional security assistance\u201d to Ukraine, including the kind of air defense help Trump announced moments earlier, and to begin \u201ctightening sanctions on Russia\u2019s war machine.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOn a bipartisan and bicameral basis, Congress is prepared to help President Trump apply the necessary pressure on Putin to get him to the negotiating table and end the killing once and for all,\u201d the lawmakers added.<\/p>\n

Strained relations<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Trump on Wednesday wrapped the summit amid renewed tensions with the alliance\u2019s European leaders over the joint conflict with Iran, the Russia-Ukraine conflict and how much their countries spend on defense.\u00a0Notably, Trump did not hold any public one-on-one meetings with European leaders, known as \u201cbilaterals,\u201d during the summit, despite announcing several pending deals between American arms manufacturers and NATO members and describing alliance leaders\u2019 closed-door sessions as warm and professional.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey didn\u2019t respect us two years ago. They laughed at us,\u201d Trump said at the press conference. \u201cNATO laughed at us. Everybody laughed at us. They don\u2019t laugh anymore. There\u2019s no more laughing this year.\u201d<\/p>\n

In what appeared a signal to European leaders, he showed notable deference to the meeting\u2019s host, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.<\/p>\n

He also panned European leaders both days for opting to mostly stay out of the joint U.S.-Israeli war with Iran.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018Would you like to help?\u2019 They said, \u2018We do, but we want to wait till the war is over.\u2019 This was not in the spirit of Winston Churchill,\u201d Trump quipped during Wednesday\u2019s press conference.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the day, Rutte tried a little flattery to ease the trans-Atlantic tensions, telling Trump he was solely responsible for a recent uptick in European countries\u2019 defense budgets.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would argue without you in this chair, this would not have happened. It is, of course, because of Russia, but also because of you,\u201d he told Trump in front of reporters. \u201cYou did this. \u2026 You made this happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

During an event last week sponsored by the Center for European Policy Analysis, Jan Lipavsk\u00fd, a former Czech Republic foreign affairs minister, said that \u201cnow [more] than ever it\u2019s more about practical commitments rather than big geopolitical discussions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think everyone understands, or at least the major players understands, that real things have to happen now,\u201d he said. \u201cWe may use the names like \u2018NATO 3.0,\u2019 or whatever. But at the end of the day, it will be about \u2026 European countries putting money into defense.\u201d<\/p>\n
