The White House\u2019s growing frustration with Senate Majority Leader John Thune seeped into public again on Thursday, the second consecutive day team Trump has vented at the chamber\u2019s Republican leader.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis patience is running out,\u201d White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said, referring to President Donald Trump\u2019s feelings about Thune. \u201cHe wants to see as much of the SAVE America [Act] passed as possible by the August recess.\u201d<\/p>\n

The White House press secretary\u2019s rare criticism of a majority leader from the same party as a sitting president came one day after Trump complained about Thune\u2019s job performance near the end of an event in Marietta, Ga. <\/p>\n

During that event, Trump groaned to a friendly audience about the Senate being unable to clear a 60-vote threshold on the SAVE America bill, a package of GOP-crafted elections changes that critics say would represent an unprecedented level of federal involvement in election administration.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody call John Thune at the Senate. He\u2019s the leader of the Republican Party. And tell them to get this stuff approved,\u201d he told the crowd. \u201cSo we\u2019re fighting so that all voters must show voter ID. We\u2019re fighting so that all voters must provide proof of citizenship, OK? And also the no mail-in ballots, very important.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the lead-up to his call for a Thune phone blitz, Trump grew agitated when talking about the Senate\u2019s 60-vote threshold.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey got to really terminate the filibuster, get everything approved right away, because you\u2019re going to have a stoppage. You\u2019re going to have a stoppage in September,\u201d he said, warning of a government shutdown when funding potentially lapses on Sept. 30. \u201cThe Democrats won\u2019t approve [any]thing. They\u2019ve become deranged. \u2026 They should terminate the filibuster.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thune on Thursday pushed back on the press secretary\u2019s comments, saying Leavitt or \u201csomebody else\u201d should \u201cget on the phone and get the votes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead of, you know, pointing the finger at Republicans, they might think about going after the people who are stopping it on the floor, which is the Democrats,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd if there are Republicans that they think are gettable, get on the phone. Let\u2019s get them to \u2018yes.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

At least two GOP senators took umbrage with Leavitt\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have 1,000 percent confidence in Thune, and anybody in the White House who thinks he\u2019s not a good leader isn\u2019t qualified for their job,\u201d retiring North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis told reporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just don\u2019t have the votes,\u201d said Sen. John Cornyn, a Texas Republican who lost to a Trump-backed opponent in the primary, referring to the election bill. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing that Senator Thune can do to change that. This idea that [Trump] can just command members of the Republican Conference to get in line is just a fantasy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier that day, in the White House briefing room, Leavitt said that Trump \u201cknows that\u2019s what the American people want to see passed,\u201d adding: \u201cThey want proof of citizenship in our elections, and the President feels very strongly about that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe American people \u2026 elected, overwhelmingly, Republicans to lead \u2014 not just this White House, but also the House and the Senate. The House did its job,\u201d she added, referring to that chamber passing the SAVE bill. \u201cThe Senate needs to do its job, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Thune Thursday reiterated the difficulties of passing SAVE in the Senate, including using the budget reconciliation process. The House adopted a GOP-backed budget resolution along party lines Wednesday with funding to incentivize states to adopt portions of the legislation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there\u2019s an opportunity to deal with a budget resolution, the SAVE Act to get through a Byrd bath would have to be very carefully structured based upon incentive, mostly grant money,\u201d Thune said. \u201cDepending on that structure, whether or not we can get much of it included in a budget resolution, is still an open question.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to do everything we can to move that forward,\u201d he continued. \u201cBut as I\u2019ve told you before, the math on that hasn\u2019t changed, and it\u2019s still likely to be a 60-vote exercise\u2026I can\u2019t count 50 right now on a budget resolution.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

During his exchange with reporters at the Capitol, Tillis was more blunt, telling reporters \u201cwe\u2019re wasting our time and we\u2019re being dishonest to the American people to say that we need SAVE Act passed because there\u2019s no way on God\u2019s green earth it can be implemented by this election.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cornyn, meanwhile, argued the debate has further damaged Republicans\u2019 chances of retaining a congressional majority after November.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know who it was that sold the president on this idea that this was attainable, but it\u2019s creating a circular firing squad for Republicans,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd here we are, what? One-hundred and three days before the midterm elections?\u00a0<\/p>\n
