Few things are certain in Congress anymore. One thing lawmakers can still count on? August recess.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But the five-week-long break for the House isn\u2019t all fun and games \u2014 especially ahead of the tight midterm elections battle for the majority.<\/p>\n

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is packing his bags for a campaign blitz with incumbents and challengers across 17 states, not including his home state, and 30 districts and cities, per a leadership aide.<\/p>\n

And Democrats are launching their own \u201c100 days of action,\u201d Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said, starting with events over the weekend to mark 100 days until election day.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Republican Rep. Derrick Van Orden, who is facing a true toss-up race for Wisconsin\u2019s 3rd District, said he\u2019s hitting the road.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to be with my constituents as much as possible, riding my motorcycle from point to point,\u201d he said Thursday. \u201cIt can take, like, five hours to go from one point of my district to another, and we do six or seven events a day. That\u2019s every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you know what? That\u2019s part of the job, and it\u2019s great because that\u2019s the only time we really get to see people,\u201d he said, adding that \u201csitting around having cheese curds and beer\u201d beats meeting over Zoom.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Aside from campaigning, lawmakers have district work, like meeting with constituents and fielding their requests, waiting for them at home.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rep. Riley Moore, R-W.Va., said he was immediately going to Weston, W.Va., a community affected by fatal flash floods in the state last week. He described pushing for a disaster declaration, which unlocks certain federal support.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s some people that are still missing. \u2026 We had a river rise up to almost 30 feet,\u201d Moore said. \u201cWe\u2019re always kind of forgotten, it\u2019s really a tragedy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., who\u2019s in the running for the late Sen. Lindsey Graham\u2019s seat, said\u00a0 he\u2019s preparing for a debate during the first week in August.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBack home, it\u2019s still constituents, but the campaign ball is just different,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

But there\u2019s still time for a reprieve.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to a month in the better Washington,\u201d said Rep. Emily Randall, D-Wash.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Randall said she\u2019ll spend some time \u201con the water, on the Sound.\u201d She added she\u2019s attending community events to talk to people about \u201cthe ongoing war that\u2019s driving up the cost of living and inability for this administration to invest in health care for people.\u201d Primary elections in Washington state are also in August.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think what I\u2019ll hear over and over and over is the same thing I\u2019ve been hearing for the last 18 months \u2014 that people want us to be fighting for them and not for this administration and their supporters to get richer and richer,\u201d Randall said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., said he\u2019ll be out \u201cgetting reelected \u2014 knocking on doors, working the polls, putting up some yard signs.\u201d But he\u2019s also looking forward to checking some items off of his to-do list and spending time with his family.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy donkeys just tear up my fences all the time, so I\u2019ve got a little sawmill, I\u2019m gonna cut some wood,\u201d he said. \u201cI do more work when I\u2019m home than I am here, honestly.\u201d<\/p>\n
