                                        {"id":754,"date":"2026-07-30T17:49:55","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T17:49:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/americanindustryreview.com\/?p=754"},"modified":"2026-07-30T17:49:55","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T17:49:55","slug":"proposals-to-lower-health-costs-get-broad-support-in-battlegrounds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/americanindustryreview.com\/?p=754","title":{"rendered":"Proposals to lower health costs get broad support in battlegrounds"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Voters in battleground states and congressional districts tend to voice support\u00a0for proposals in Congress that would expand access to health care or lower drug costs\u00a0\u2014\u00a0often irrespective of their party affiliation \u2014\u00a0according to new polling from\u00a0the University of Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanindustryreview.com\/?p=752\">Lawmakers want better data on AI\u2019s workforce impacts<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The poll, first shared with CQ Roll Call, surveyed people in 11 competitive states like Pennsylvania, Georgia and Nevada,\u00a0and 28 competitive congressional districts, finding a lot of common ground.\u00a0It focused on proposals circulating in Congress, including capping drug prices at what other countries pay\u00a0and restoring Affordable Care Act enhanced premium tax credits that expired last year.<\/p>\n<p>More than 19,000 people responded, with a large majority liking\u00a0ideas such as lowering the age for Medicare eligibility and even a new government-run health insurance program. At least two-thirds of respondents from both parties said they favor lowering the Medicare eligibility age to 55, with a similar share favoring\u00a0the creation of a government-run health insurance plan \u201cthat anyone can buy into.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Steven Kull, the director of the Program for Public Consultation at the University of Maryland, said the results show growing comfort with government involvement in health care as Americans\u2019 health costs rise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation is stark enough that people are feeling that the government, even people who have maybe historically been more resistant to the idea of government playing an active role, are now more accepting of that idea,\u201d he said in an interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In other results, more than 4 out of 5\u00a0Democrats, and at least a similar share\u00a0of Republicans, said they would support measures that would cap the price of prescription drugs at what other countries pay. The Trump administration has attempted to implement this policy through individual deals with pharmaceutical companies, using tariffs as leverage, and has asked Congress to codify it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanindustryreview.com\/?p=750\">Senate weighs next steps on Russia-Iran sanctions<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The responses can vary significantly by district.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, between 70 percent and 87\u00a0percent of Democrats, and between 68 percent to 90 percent of Republicans,\u00a0depending on the area surveyed, said they would support allowing the government to override patents of prescription drugs developed using federal funds if the price is deemed unaffordable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Between 83 percent and 94 percent of Democrats and\u00a065 percent to 85 percent of Republicans said that they would support restoring the enhanced ACA premium tax credits.
