Richard Cash and some other Republicans to change their position on redrawing the lines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can no longer support passage of this bill for one simple reason. South Carolina citizens are going to the polls today, and neither my conscience nor my common sense will allow me to stop an election that is already under way,\u201d Cash said.<\/p>\n<p>The South Carolina state House last week approved a new House map that would target Rep. James E. Clyburn, the only Democrat in the state\u2019s delegation, by seeking to draw new district lines that would favor Republicans in all seven House seats.<\/p>\n<p>But some Republican legislators had resisted the push to redraw the map, suggesting it could possibly create more pickup opportunities for Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>State legislators could still seek to redraw its map ahead of the 2028 election, an approach Republican Gov. Brian Kemp has taken in neighboring Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanindustryreview.com\/?p=80\">Hantavirus, Ebola highlight political division over disease<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The vote in the South Carolina legislature came hours after a three-judge federal panel blocked Alabama from using a new map in this fall\u2019s elections that would favor Democrats in just one House seat, rather than two.<\/p>\n<p>And in Tennessee, a federal judge Tuesday  an effort from challengers to quickly block a new congressional map in that state that targets the only seat held by a Democrat. Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., has already said he won\u2019t run again under the new map.<\/p>\n<p>The developments come as Republicans across the South have sought to revisit their House maps over the last several weeks, after a Supreme Court decision invalidated Louisiana\u2019s congressional map over the use of race in drawing district lines.<\/p>\n<p>That ruling sparked a new wave of redistricting efforts after several states had redrawn their own maps since last summer, when President Donald Trump began urging Republican legislators to redraw their maps to gain an advantage in the fight for the House.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/americanindustryreview.com\/?p=78\">At the Races: Choosin\u2019 Texas<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A push to redraw South Carolina\u2019s congressional map for this year\u2019s midterm elections fell short Tuesday, as several Republicans joined Democrats on a procedural vote that essentially halted a redistricting measure.
